JRN 423 Final Project Proposal - When There's Nothing Left To Give

I want my final project to be documentary style about a man who has nothing, but still gives his time to others. Derrick Klug has been homeless for almost a year and living out of his Ford Taurus. Due to weather, he is living in a spare room of a friend on a mattress filled with holes. My plan is to interview people who are closest to Derrick and get their perspective on his situation, and also interview Derrick himself. I also would like to get an interview from his boss at Listening Ear. I feel Derrick is a good topic because his situation is so unique. Derrick has no place to call his own, but he works at Listening Ear with mentally disabled people, and also gives his time to the His House worship team. He has very little to call his own, yet he is giving so much to other people.

Chapter 1
My first chapter will be about Derrick’s living situation. It will showcase where Derrick lives and give the background on why he is living in his current situation, which will include an interview with Derrick. This is the interview will give all the background information. For instance: why is Derrick living this way? What are his future plans? I will also get an interview with the friend who is allowing Derrick to stay in his spare bedroom. These interviews will mostly be visual, but some of them will overlay some of the daily activities around the house that Derrick partakes.

Chapter 2
This chapter will focus on Derrick’s outside life. In this section, I will show visually Derrick’s involvement with the His House worship band, and get an interview with the worship leader, Benjamin Evers. This will be visually and possibly overlayed with Derrick at His House. I will also be getting an interview with his fiancé Betsy Grannis. She will be talking about Derrick’s life, their life together, and the Bible study they are both a part of. Betsy’s interview will also be visual overlayed the stated activities.

Chapter 3
This chapter will show the audience what Derrick does at his job with Listening Ear. I’m going to get release forms and permission to shoot video inside, hopefully with patients, and get an inside look at the job. I am also going to interview Derrick while he is work. I hope that this interview with Derrick will provide an answer as to why he chose this particular job.

I decided to choose this topic because I feel that Derrick’s situation is very unique. He has no money, no place to live, he is living in a spare bedroom on an old mattress with holes, and all of his belongings are in the corner of the room. This is not the ordinary life of a mid-20s white American male, let alone a mid-20s white male in a college town. I want the audience, preferably college students, to see that they do not have it so bad. Most students in Mount Pleasant have a place to live, a car to drive, and a room of their own. Derrick has a car to drive, and his clothes. That is it. I want the audience to see what it is like to have practically nothing, but still have joy and the desire to help others who do not have the same opportunity as him; for example, the people he helps at Listening Ear.
