Light from lamp post overhead along with lamp post camera left, and Christmas lights camera left as well. Some of these photos had use of a flash set at 1/16th power and a reflector, however, this photo did not utilize those.

Midland senior Joe Vercellino sits on a street corner in down town Mt. Pleasant and plays the guitar on a Sunday night. "I don't play for money, I just play so people can listen," says Vercellino.

Inspiration

As I'm coming to a close on my career at CMU, I'm trying to figure out what direction I want to go with my photography. Every class I've taken has brought me closer to realizing what it is that I truly enjoy. One of these areas of photography just so happens to be documentary photography.

Someone who has inspired me is Brent Stirton. He is the senior staff photographer for the assignment division at Getty Images. His photos have been used in publications ranging from National Geographic to GQ and many more. He is given the opportunity to travel nine months out of the year, and has won many awards from many different clubs and publications, one in particular being the National Press Photographers Association.

What really stuck out about Stirton's work was his use of lighting, composition, and color. In his project of a tribe in Papua New Guinea, he accentuates the color of the tribe's painted faces, and uses angles and situations that drive home the idea that these people do not live the way the rest of the world as we see it lives. The access he must have is simply incredible, and he uses that to his advantage to make amazing photos that others are not privy to. If I could ever aspire to be as good as someone, he would be it.

I definitely learned how to bounce flash better than I knew before. I never knew before that the subject could not see any part of the flash or else direct flash would be in there somehow. I also learned how to use my strobe better.

Poverty is so prevalent in our country, but do we take action, or turn a blind eye? There are so many people in our own country that have no where to go, and no one to help them. But our society is so bent on being successful and taking care of "Number 1" that we forget about those that have nothing, or we just don''t care.

Assignment 5: Location Lighting

Candace Riley is an aspiring photographer out of Traverse City, MI. Riley loves to focus on nature to capture the beauty around her. She never went to school for photography, but is thinking about going back to do just that.

Assignment 3: Still Life

ISO: 200 Aperature: f/4.5 Shutter Speed: 250 Light was all the way down to power 1 and lamp was all the way down.

Every art form has it's tool. Brushes are a unique way for artists to render their world as they see it. Whether it be through self-portraits, still-lifes or abstract art. There are no rules when the brush is in hand.



ISO: 200 Aperature: f/4.5 Shutter Speed: 200 Lighting was the same as first.

Some people collect coins, some people collect buttons, and then some people collect rubber ducks. Graduate Student Janann Rotman haS at least 9 rubber ducks in her car that she has obtained from various places around the country.

Assignment 2:Painting With Light

ISO: 100 Aperature: f/4.5 Shutter Speed: Bulb

I strobed Sarah first with 1/16th power with no gel, and then position Lindsey behind her and strobed her at 1/4 +0.3 with a red gel to give her the "demon" effect. The second time I strobed Sarah at 1/8 +0.7 power with no gel, and then strobed Lindsey at 1/4th power. This created the effect that Sarah had a "demon" following her causing confusion in her life.

With Halloween coming up, ghost stories begin to circulate around campus and other parts of the world. Many believe in other beings that are constantly watching us and following us where ever we go.

I strobed Lindsey first with the strobe set at 1/4th power with a red gel overtop, then strobed Sarah at 1/8th power with no gel, and then took the red gel and covered a flashlight and created the "fire" around her to give the "hell-ish" effect.

In this photo, I outlined Krista with a white flashlight to try and give her that sillouette look. Then I took a red flashlight and created the sun in between her hands. Lastly I did the water with a flashlight covered with blue paper. This whole photo took about 2 minutes each try.

JRN 420 Portrait Assignment

Joe Vercellino is a Midland, MI senior from Central Michigan University. Vercellino has been playing the guitar since he was 10 years old. Right now he is looking into becoming a solo artist doing singing and songwriting, and also becoming a motivational speaker to high schools all around the country.



Vercellino has always had a passion for music and using it to reach into the hearts of people everywhere. "I play because it's me. It's kind of a form of catharsis, it's allows me to release a lot of energy, capture memories or emotions, and really put my heart into something people can identify with."


Once I was able to get the rim lighting exactly the way I wanted it, the rest was much easier than I anticipated. I didn't have any problems with any of the lights, everything worked the way it was supposed to. I feel the rim lighting was able to separate my subject from the background very well. I do not feel the lighting was too harsh in any of the photos and everything was well lit and exposed correctly.

420 Test Photo

I learned in this exercise that with her wearing a white hat, the lighting is a little too harsh, and I need to separate the background more from anything she is wearing.

So this is my first video for JRN 423. I'm not too happy with it. I think I'm gonna end up re-doing this one to make it better. Let me know what you think could make it better!! I have some ideas, but I want to know your opinons!
